This year, the finals of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship will be held in Italy for the first time. The tournament will be played from 16 to 30 June in five Italian cities – Bologna, Reggio Emilia, Trieste, Udine and Cesena – as well as in San Marino. At our stadiums, 12 national sides and 276 players will face off, in a competition that will feature many prospects who are already leading stars in major leagues and European tournaments. Italy's U21 coach Gigi Di Biagio will also be able to count on many players who are already part of Roberto Mancini's senior side but will join up the under-21 team for the European Championship on home soil.
In GROUP A – played in Bologna and Reggio Emilia – Italy, Spain, Belgium and Poland will compete. Fixtures from this group – Italy v Spain and Belgium v Poland – will open the tournament on 16 June.
In GROUP B – played in Trieste and Udine – Serbia, Austria, Denmark and the reigning champions Germany will compete.
In GROUP C – played in Cesena and San Marino – France, England, Croatia and Romania will take to the field.
The winners of the three groups plus the best runner-up will qualify for the semi-finals, scheduled for 27 June in Bologna and Reggio Emilia. The four semi-finalists will also qualify for the tournament at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The final will take place in Udine on Sunday 30 June. The ambassador for the tournament is Andrea Pirlo, who holds the record for most appearances and goals for Italy’s Under-21 team.
